The archipelago of Los Roques
At only 75 miles from the coast of Venezuela, Los Roques is a wonderful haven of green and crystal clear waters and white sand, an archipelago of 350 islands, islets, rocks, atolls and sandbanks at low tide that leaves the open coral formations. Almost completely unknown until a few years ago, the Los Roques has just recently opened to the world of tourism. The only inhabited island is Gran Roque, where the accommodation called posadas are located, simple fishermen's houses renovated and equipped with all essential amenities. The posadas have a few rooms - the largest do not exceed 10/12 rooms - and a completely dedicated service to the customer. You must also remember that Los Roques is a National Marine Park and that, while the incomparable beauty, can present some drawbacks to the traveler accustomed to the comforts of modern accommodation. This holiday is therefore recommended for those who have a great spirit of adaptability and those who prefer a beach in a unique and extraordinary environment at the expense of giving up some of the modern conveniences. Another minor inconvenience may be the presence of small insects common in tropical environments, exacerbated in Los Roques to the presence of thick mangrove vegetation therefore recommend the use of insect repellents. The presence of these insects, in fact, is not synonymous with poor hygiene, but their elimination is almost impossible.
In Los Roques - the only inhabited island - there are no roads or cars or motorcycles, except for a small community truck. There is also a small bank. Credit cards are not accepted everywhere, so you should use cash.
In Los Roques, moreover, there is a mains water supply for fresh water, which therefore is a valuable asset. The available water is partly based on rainwater harvesting (which is very thin) but mainly by the treatment of desalination of seawater. For these reasons, please limit the use to what is strictly necessary.
